Two exceptional bar bites anchor a cool neighborhood spot where the vibe hits harder than most of the menu.
Overview
Oy Bar sits in the bones of the former Oyster House on Moorpark Street, a neighborhood dive that somehow landed in the hands of chef Jeff Strauss, a former TV writer who clearly knows how to pitch a concept. The place pulls from Jewish, Japanese, Mexican, and California influences without trying too hard to explain itself. The kitchen runs Tuesday through Saturday, 5 to 10 p.m., and the bar stays open until 11.
From the moment you walk in, the vibe does the heavy lifting. Cool lighting, a genuine dive-bar energy, and subtle touches that signal someone with actual kitchen chops designed this space. Friendly staff, easy atmosphere, and the kind of bar you want to build a Tuesday-night ritual around.
What We Ordered
Crispy Potatoes
These were fire and addicting. Simple done right, and they set the tone for the night. Nothing complicated going on, just well-executed bar food that hits the spot.
Bluefin Tartare
A miss. Bland and mushy, which is about the worst combo for a raw fish dish. There is no saving a tartare that has neither flavor nor texture. A disappointment given the ambitious menu and the caliber of chef behind it.
Wild Mushroom & Scallion Salad
The texture leg something to be desired but the flavor was solid, even if the dish as a whole wasn’t something weβd want to repeat. Solid components that didn’t quite coalesce.
Market Lettuce Salad (with Egg)
Just fine. Nothing to write home about, but not an offense to anyone at the table. The kind of side that fills a gap without really standing well on its own.
The G/O-G Burger
This is the kind of burger that makes you sit up and take notice. Great char on the patty, cooked exactly right, with a mild horseradish sauce that added brightness without overwhelming. Awesome. If there is one dish here that screams “come back for this,” it is the burger.
Wagyu Pastrami Quesadilla
Another standout. The jalapeΓ±os added just the right amount of kick, the cheese got properly crispy, and the beef was excellent. This is the kind of playful bar food that makes Oy Bar worth knowing about. The quesadilla was awesome, and it pairs perfectly with the burger as the two must-order items on the menu.
Blondie
The flavor was ok but it was hard and almost stale. Dessert was not a strong point of the night.
Corn Ice Cream
Not much corn flavor to speak of. Just a light vanilla ice cream with ambition it had not yet earned.
Cocktails
The freezer martini with a lemon twist (because olives are gross) was great. A classic execution with the one reasonable modification. Nothing fancy, nothing that needs explaining.

The Quirks
- A menu that pulls from four different culinary traditions and mostly makes it work, even if a couple of dishes fall short
- Dessert needs serious work (blondie and corn ice cream both missed the mark)
- The burger and quesadilla are so strong they carry the whole meal
- Kitchen hours are limited (Tue-Sat only) so plan accordingly
The Verdict
Oy Bar is a cool dive with obviously upscale touches, and the two standouts (the G/O-G burger and the wagyu pastrami quesadilla) are genuinely worth a visit. The bluefin tartare was a notable miss, and dessert did not inspire confidence, but the vibe, the friendly staff, and the freezer martini round out an experience that is worth repeating. Would definitely go back, and when I do, I will order the burger and the quesadilla.
