A tiny, friendly sushi spot where the deluxe platter mostly delivers, but nothing here begs for a second visit.
Overview
Bengee Sushi is a small, friendly sushi spot in Ontario that we stopped into for dinner, and it’s the kind of place that does most things fine without ever quite grabbing us.
First Impressions
The space is genuinely tiny, with a small-town feel that works in its favor — nothing pretentious going on here. Service was a highlight all night: excellent, informal, and easy to talk to.
What We Ordered
Seaweed Salad
Good flavor and a solid way to start the meal.
House Salad
Decent, with a traditional sesame dressing. The avocado on top was a good touch.
Salmon Kama (Salmon Collar)
Not bad, though my wife thought it came out overcooked.
Snow Crab Hand Roll
Bland. Not worth ordering.
Curry Tornado Omurice
Too thin and watery. The flavor itself was fine, but the lack of real substance on the texture front left the whole dish feeling lacking. The chicken in it wasn’t great either.
Deluxe Nine-Grid Omakase Sashimi (Toro subbed for Uni)
We swapped the uni for toro since we don’t care for uni, and the results across the grid were mixed. The salmon was pretty good, solidly average. Ahi tuna was a clear win. Octopus was fine, though the lemon came on stronger than the octopus itself. Scallop landed flat, with no real flavor to speak of. Shrimp, yellowtail, and albacore all cleared the bar without much fuss. The letdown was the toro, served some sort of ground or minced way that came out mushy rather than clean — the one component here we wouldn’t order again.
Sake
Dassai 45, a reliable choice and a good match for the meal.

The Quirks
- Tiny space with a genuine small-town feel — don’t expect a big dining room.
- The Deluxe Nine-Grid Omakase Sashimi lets you swap components — we subbed toro in for uni.
The Verdict
Bengee Sushi is a perfectly fine neighborhood sushi spot. The seaweed salad, house salad, tuna, shrimp, yellowtail, and albacore all did their job, service was excellent, and the space has a genuine small-town charm. But the snow crab hand roll, the curry tornado omurice, and the ground toro were real misses, and nothing here rose to the level of a dish worth ordering again. Probably won’t be returning.
