A gorgeous, somewhat pretentious room carrying one great dish and a dessert Β — and not much else.

Overview

Bar di Bello landed in Silver Lake’s Sunset Row promising Milanese glamour and aperitivo energy, and the buzz has been loud since it opened. We finally got a table and came away thinking the hype has outrun the kitchen.

First Impressions

The first challenge is finding the place. Bar di Bello sits inside a strip mall with no outdoor signage, which we assume is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight, but it makes for an odd contrast with a room this dressed up. Once you’re inside, the mid-century Italian design comes through — warm wood paneling, a sculptural bottle display, and a bar built for people watching. It’s a good-looking room. It just doesn’t fully square with the strip-mall doorstep out front.

What We Ordered

Chicken Schnitzel

The best dish of the night by a wide margin. Excellent texture and crunch on the breading, and the flavor underneath was exactly right. If everything else on the table matched this, this review would read very differently.

Meatballs

Fine and forgettable. Nothing wrong with them exactly, just nothing that stuck with us either.

Prosciutto & Peaches

Also just fine. The peaches weren’t fully ripe, which flattened the whole plate, and the prosciutto itself wasn’t a standout cut.

Orecchiette al RagΓΉ Bianco

Bland. A dish that should carry a lot of flavor from the ragu came across average across the board.

Steak

Underwhelming, and the weakest dish on the table. Not enough crust, too much sauce covering it up, and the texture was chewier than we’d want from a cut this expensive.

Tiramisu

Amazing, full stop. Well balanced, not overly coffee-forward, and the combination of the cream and chocolate shavings was the best thing we ate all night. This dish alone would almost be going back for. Almost.

Cobbler

Underwhelming, and a disappointing way to close things out after the tiramisu had us hopeful the kitchen could turn it around.

The Quirks

  • Located inside a strip mall with zero outdoor signage — know the address before you go, because you will not spot it from the street and the drapes they have covering the windows inside make it impossible to see the restaurant.
  • The room is genuinely one of the better people-watching setups in the neighborhood, as is the outside as people wait for their tables (and search for the restaurant).

The Verdict

Bar di Bello is overhyped. The room looks the part, and two dishes (the chicken schnitzel and the tiramisu) are genuinely excellent. Everything else lands somewhere between fine and forgettable, and the overall vibe leans pretentious in a way the food doesn’t back up. Two good dishes aren’t enough to justify a visit.
