🌟 First Impressions:
This place screams LA burger joint. It’s a no nonsense spot. Don’t expect some full service restaurant. They do a great job at the burger. In any place other than LA, where amazing smash burgers abound, this burger could be king. But, despite an amazing bun, it just didn’t hit with the right amount of juice to claim a spot at the top of my faves list.
🍔 The Food:
What We Ordered:
- Oklahoma Burger (Double):
Surprised me by not being much different than the regular. Basically just added grilled onions, which were solid.I just don’t get adding a whole menu item for this. - Burger (Double): Great King’s Hawaiian bun.
Good mix of toppings (great pickles), but using ketchup is a miss, imho. Not juicy enough. - Hand Cut Fries:
Solid skinny fries. Right amount of seasoning.
Burger Scoring Breakdown (combined analysis of the two burgers):
| Category | Score (1-5) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Patty-to-Bun Ratio (20%) | 5 | Excellent, with a ton of spill over of beef, allowing you to nibble on the meat and cheese solo. |
| Bun Quality & Softness (15%) | 4 | I love a King’s Hawaiian bun. So, high marks for using a great bun, but I can’t give a 5 if you’re not making it yourself or sourcing locally. |
| Patty Moistness (15%) | 2 | This is where the wheels came close to falling off. Just not juicy. I’d say it was over cooked. I am not sure what beef fat ratio they use, but it didn’t matter… they cooked all that fat off and didn’t leave the burger with much there. |
| Flavor Complexity (15%) | 3 | Solid seasoning on the burger. Some juicy goodness would have added something here. |
| Toppings & Balance (15%) | 3 | Good mix of toppings, but I’m a secret sauce guy. They committed the cardinal sin of RUNNING OUT OF SECRET SAUCE. Ketchup is fine, but no replacement for a good burger sauce. |
| Cheese & Sauce Integration (15%) | 3 | Good cheesy bites throughout. The beef hanging on the patty wasn’t cheesy, but that’s understandable. However, given the lack of juiciness, that ended up a bit too dry. |
| Structural Integrity (5%) | 3 | The burger was definitely something that we could grab and eat. Perhaps more sauce and a juicier patty would dismantle the thing, but overall pretty sturdy. |
| Overall Satisfaction (10%) | 3 | Good burger I would definitely eat without (major) complaint |
Final Score: [Calculated out of 5] | 3.4 | Add a good burger sauce and a juicier patty and you have yourself a contender. As is, I’m sure she ate it, but I doubt she wrote home about it. |
🛑 The Quirks:
They serve the burger with ketchup by default. In a world of great burger sauces, I don’t get this (I’m looking at you, too, Burgers Never Say Die).
🏆 The Verdict:
It’s definitely a solid burger. I’d happily eat it again. But, the problem is LA is a burger town and competition is fierce. Think of spots like For the Win, Chris and Eddy’s, and MANY more, it’s tough area to come out on top. Would I pick this spot over all the other options? Nah. But, if I were in the vicinity, I’d definitely sneak myself a burger.
